Hawley Arrested After Foot Chase

Moorefield Police Department Lieutenant Mel Burrows was on routine patrol in the Town Park on Friday afternoon, June 26. She saw a man, identified as Steven Hawley of Moorefield, near the pool smoking a cigarette. 

Burrows knew Hawley had an active arrest warrant, and attempted to make contact with him. He fled on foot. [private]

MPD Sergeant Kevin Helmick II and Patrolman Deavonta Johnson responded to help. Following a foot chase that included part of Spring Avenue near the Post Office, the three officers took Hawley into custody without further incident.

They recovered $1,534, a digital scale and one capsule containing a white, powdery substance on Hawley’s person. 

With assistance of citizens who witnessed Hawley tossing items as he was fleeing, they also recovered 51 capsules containing a white, powdery substance.

Hawley was arrested on the outstanding arrest warrant and additionally charged with possession with the intent to deliver a Schedule II Narcotic (Fentanyl) and fleeing from an officer.
