There was a rumbling in Harrisonburg as Broadway Bruins roared and shredded the Elkton Blue Sox at James Madison University’s Eagle Field during a doubleheader by the scores of 11-3 and 3-nil (five innings – lightning shortened game) last Saturday with Mountain State players making the difference.
Hedgesville graduate and current JMU player Chase DeLauter dominated at the plate hitting triples thrice and notching a double with four RBIs and scoring four times in the opening contest before following up with an encore solo home run in the second game.
The clear and sunny day was having a great impact on the execution of plays and the enjoyment of the games before a late storm popped up.
Elkins native and Glenville State College pitcher Adam Riggleman contributed on the mound tossing three innings to finish out the fist game garnering four strikeouts and allowing zero walks with just two hits allowed.
East Hardy graduate and Ohio Valley University product Bryce Strawderman created two double plays defensively [private]in the doubleheader including a sliding save for a catch and throw in addition to scoring once off one of DeLauter’s triples.
Hampshire graduate John Judy recorded an RBI triple in the sixth inning of the first game and an RBI double in the second game, while fellow Trojan alum Tyler Ault made a diving save at shortstop with the wherewithal to get up and fire to first base for the out.
In the first game, Broadway took a 6-nil advantage over the initial two innings of play as DeLauter recorded a pair of RBI triples in both frames and Dukes teammate Josh Jones added an RBI single in the first inning plus a RBI sacrifice fly in the second inning.
Judy and Cole Holsinger both enabled runs to score during errors in the first inning.
In the fourth inning, Strawderman reached base on an error and scored on an RBI triple by DeLauter.
DeLauter scored on an RBI single from Jones.
The Blue Sox would score twice in the third inning and added one run in the sixth inning, but failed to overcome the Bruins (11-4) deficit.
Broadway’s Travis Reifsnider doubled in the sixth inning and scored on an RBI double by DeLauter which bounced off the center field wall as the outfielder made a dive to no avail.
After a walk was given to Ault, Holsinger hit a RBI sacrifice fly and Judy followed with an RBI triple sliding into the base which sent Ault home.
Broadway pitcher Brett Whiteman, a Frankfort and Potomac State product, allowed a double to start the second game by Will Decker which bounced off the top of the padded wall.
Whiteman settled down and sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around a walk and a sacrifice bunt to end the frame.
Strawderman was the leadoff batter for the Bruins, but grounded out to the Elkton second baseman, who managed to scoop up the ball and throw from his knees for a wide throw caught by the first baseman making the tag on Strawderman’s neck.
After the second out, DeLauter smashed the solo home run for a 1-nil lead.
Elkton’s Tucker Hensley singled just past the diving attempt at third base to kickoff the second inning.
Koice Quntanilla was up next for the Blue Sox connecting for what was nearly an infield blooper, but Strawderman dashed to second base making a sliding dive for the catch and fired the ball to first base for the double play.
The Blue Sox managed to get a runner on due to an error as first baseman Natty Solomon struggled to collect the ball and the pass was dropped by Whiteman, who was racing over to first base to cover it and the inning ended on a flyout.
Ault received a free pass before Holsinger struck out in the bottom of the second inning for the Bruins.
Broadway’s John Judy garnered an RBI double to the right center field wall to lift the lead to 2-0 and was stranded on a strikeout and groundout.
Elkton went down in order in the third inning as Ault made a running save and throw and caught a pop-up and a flyout was snatched in right field.
Strawderman hit a deep ball to center field which was caught, then Reifsnider singled and DeLauter was given an intentional walk.
Both runners were stranded on groundout by Jones and a strikeout to Ault.
Whiteman appeared to be in a little bit of a pickle in the fourth inning with the bases loaded on two walks and a single against the Blue Sox, but the Bruins pitcher dialed in to close the inning with two strikeouts and three total in the frame.
Elkton pitcher Carrson Atkins tossed three strikeouts and allowed one walk in the bottom half with Broadway holding a 2-0 advantage.
Strawderman attempted to pull of a double play on a fielder’s choice at second base in the top of the fifth inning, but the runner was ruled safe and the out was recorded at first base.
Strawderman ended inning trapping the ball on the hop and quickly throwing to first base for the out.
After a strikeout on Strawderman, Reifsnider connected for a single into right field.
DeLauter nearly added another hit, but was robbed on a leaping overhead catch by Elkton second baseman Will Decker in center field.
Jones ripped an RBI double to give the Bruins a 3-0 lead and Ault went down on strikes to end the inning,
There was lightning seen by the umpires as a storm started to roll into the area with an initial delay before the game was officially ended with Broadway winning 3-nil in five innings.[/private]
