To the Editor:
I thank Kenneth Jones for his Letter to the Editor that appeared in the October 9, 2024 edition of the Moorefield Examiner. One concern was the open assertion Republicans in both the House and Senate yielded to objections from their then all-but-certain presidential nominee, former president Donald Trump to oppose the bill. I wish to point out the last comprehensive immigration reform was enacted almost four decades ago, during Ronald Reagan’s presidency. The bill extended legal protection to millions of migrants who had entered the U.S. illegally but offered little to stem the flow of such migrants. In the fall of 2023, Democrats were willing in principle to support a bill that focused entirely on border security without provisions to legalize the status of any migrants who had entered the country illegally–not even the “Dreamers”. We will never know what would have happened if compromise legislation had been put on the table when it was uncertain whether Trump would be the Republican nominee for the third consecutive time. Now that we know, Republicans will not compromise on immigration because running on illegal immigration is a page from the playbook that helped Trump win the presidency in the 2016 and they do not see why they should do anything to promote immigration reform during an election year.

To the Editor:
Years ago, I worked harvesting peaches with Haitian migrants. They worked their tails off. They needed work. With those long arms, I couldn’t hang ‘em.
I’m like Donald Trump (white, German descent) about the same age (me 81 – The Donald 78)
There is no way The Donald can hang with Kamala Harris at 59. Her blackness won’t rub off on you, even in W V.
