A potential game winning shot at the buzzer by Moorefield’s Cyrus Kump was waved off due to not enough time on the clock and the Colts escaped the Hive with a 39-38 victory.
Moorefield’s Cyrus Kump had made the game winning basket at the horn during the Petersburg Holiday Tournament and was given the opportunity to make another shot at the buzzer against Philip Barbour.
After the Colts took the lead on a free throw by Malachi Poling with 0.3 seconds on the clock, the Yellow Jackets had just enough time for a tip to go into the basket.
There needed to be at least 0.4 seconds for a catch and release to count.
According to the Trent Tucker Rule, a player can’t take a regular shot if there are less than 0.3 seconds left in the game clock.
However, the football pass from Shawn Reed was caught in the air by Kump, who came down with the ball and went back up taking the shot just inside the perimeter and the ball went into the hoop causing the bench to erupt in celebration which was quickly nixed as the referees waved off the basket due to lack of time for the completion of the sequence and the Colts secured the win.
Logan Watson scored a game-high 16 points for Philip Barbour in the win, followed by Kale Wolfe with nine markers.
Moorefield was led by Shawn Reed with 12 points, followed by Jackson Helmick with nine points, Guyan Kahangirwe and Cyrus Kump (all in fourth period) had eight points apiece.
“We still made too many mistakes. Too many mistakes, we’ve got to get better this point of the year. It’s the little things that win games and we’re not doing it right. Point three seconds left there, it has to be a tip. You can’t catch and shoot, so once he caught it the game was over,” Moorefield coach Scott Stutler remarked.
Three minutes into the contest, the Colts had a 5-1 lead as Moorefield missed seven field goals.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board at the 3:58 mark as Shawn Reed completed an old-fashioned three-point play to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Reed stole the ball and was fouled, then there was an offensive foul during a screen.
Philip Barbour’s Kale Wolfe knocked down a perimeter shot for an 8-4 edge at 2:07.
Wolfe swiped the ball, but theColts missed the ensuing three attempts before Kump corralled a rebound for Moorefield.
Reed made another three-point play in the paint to make it 8-7 with 1:09 left in the first period.
Kump snatched defensive and offensive boards, then the Colts’ Poling stole the ball and his shot was blocked by Kump
Philip Barbour’s Logan Watson nailed a jumper with one second left for a 10-7 lead.
Watson commenced the second period making a steal for the Colts and drawing a foul to add two points on the line at 7:43.
The Yellow Jackets hit the rim twice and the Colts came up empty at the line during the next series.
Reed notched a jumper at 6:48 as Moorefield closed the gap to 12-9.
Philip Barbour launched an air ball, then Wolfe stole the ball and missed the next shot with Reed collecting the carom and the ensuing shot was off the mark.
Watson made a long range bucket at 4:32,
A steal by Watson led to a breakaway layup by Wolfe for a 16-9 Colts advantage at 3:36.
Moorefield’s Kyle Molen hauled in an offensive rebound and dished to Jackson Helmick for a 3-pointer at 2:10.
The Colts missed two shots, then Watson blocked the Yellow Jackets.
A steal by Molen led to another perimeter bucket by Helmick which closed the gap to 16-15 with 1:11 remaining in the half.
Reed grabbed a defensive rebound and was fouled, then Poling swiped the ball and passed to Patrick Webster, who drew a foul and added two free throws for the Colts with 39 seconds to go.
Moorefield’s Guyan Kahangirwe drilled a trifecta with ten seconds left to tie the game at 18-all.
Watson sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift Philip Barbour to a 21-18 lead at halftime.
Philip Barbour’s Malachi Poling grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a layup to start the third period.
Webster stole the ball and dished to Watson for a layup as the Colts extended the lead to 25-18.
Webster made a rebound and leaping save, but the ensuing pass was intercepted by Moorefield’s Diego Taylor leading to two missed shots.
Taylor stole the ball again, but failed to connect on a layup.
Philip Barbour’s Patrick Webster hit a 3-pointer at 5:34 for a double-digit lead, 28-18.
Webster was nailed with a technical foul for his celebration and Reed made one free throw.
Watson stole the ball and netted a layup for the Colts, 30-19.
A steal by Kahangirwe led to a trip to the line and made one shot for the Yellow Jackets at 3:35.
Reed snatched a defensive rebound and dished to Kahangirwe for a layup.
Moorefield’s Kail Greenwalt collected a defensive board and found Kahangirwe for a jumper to slice the deficit to 30-24 with 2:17 left in the third period.
The Colts stalled the offense for a minute and change beef Poling scored in the paint at 1:02.
The Yellow Jackets answered with a perimeter basket by Greenwalt to make it 32-27 with 25 seconds to go.
Philip Barbour hit the rim twice to close out the third frame with Molen getting the last rebound.
Moorefield’s Cyrus Kump scored on a putback to begin the final stanza at 7:32, 32-29.
The Colts committed an offensive foul, then the Yellow Jackets hit the rim thrice despite rebounds by Kahangirwe and Kump.
The Colts were off the mark, then Reed executed another putback as the Yellow Jackets pulled within one point 32-31 at 6:13.
Greenwalt swiped the ball, but Wolfe snatched it back and scored on a layup at 5:57.
The Colts lead was down to 34-33 after a jumper by Kump for the Yellow Jackets a minute later.
Watson hit a jumper for Philip Barbour at 3:21, then Greenwalt added a free throw for Moorefield.
A jump ball went to the Colts prior to a charge, but the Yellow Jackets lost the ball as a pass went awry into the bench.
Poling scored inside the lane to put the Colts up 38-34 with 1:29 left.
Reed drew a foul and made both free throws for the Yellow Jackets at 1:07.
Philip Barbour broke the press and passed the ball around before a foul to stop the clock with 47 seconds.
Kahangirwe collected a defensive rebound and made the game-tying basket in the paint with 37 seconds to go.
A timeout was called with 11 seconds left, then Watson fell down and managed to make a pass and Pling was fouled with 0.1 seconds on the clock.
After a referee huddle, time was added to make it 0.3 seconds remaining and Poling made the game winning free throw for a 39-38 lead.
There was a violation on the second attempt, then Reed launched the ball to Kump, who caught the ball and came down with it before launching the ball into the hoop without enough time to count as the Colts collected the win.
