The Yellow Jackets swarmed around Hampshire for a 60-10 win, then the Falcons swooped into the Hive piercing the Trojans 58-11 and grounded the Yellow Jackets 41-35 to secure the tri-match victory in Moorefield on Tuesday.
“We wrestled well. This was our final home match of the season and a good tuneup for regionals next week,” Moorefield coach Rob Pillus noted.
Moorefield senior E.J. Wyman started the tri-match with a second period pin against Hampshire’s Cam Roy in the 190-lb. bout under the illuminating spotlight hanging from the rafters.
Wyman got an early takedown lifting Roy up and down to the mat, then formed a cradle along the boundary line and issued an escape to continue wrestling.
Roy countered with a takedown, but Wyman responded with a reversal to end the first period.
Wyman lifted Roy up again and back to the mat in the second period and secured a pin.
Moorefield’s Daltan Ault was given a forfeit victory for the 215-lb. Class.
Aiden Jones took a forfeit win for the Yellow Jackets in the heavyweight division (285).
The match continued with a double forfeit at the lightweight class (106).
LeeAnne Coon collected a forfeit win for the Yellow Jackets at the 113-lb. class for a 24-0 lead over Hampshire.
Moorefield’s Javier Acosta garnered a first period pin over Hampshire’s Kamdyn Phares with a quick takedown and back points prior to pin in the 120-lb. division.
The Yellow Jackets continued to collect points building a 36-nil advantage as Jean Gonzalez notched forfeit points against the Trojans in the 126-lb. spot.
Moorefield’s Jhon Paul battled against Hampshire’s David Ramey in the 132-lb. match and garnered a pin in the second period.
Ramey caught Paul with a leg lift, but Paul was able to break free for an escape point in the first period.
Paul was moved down to the mat, then created a reversal.
Ramey lifted Paul’s leg in the second period and maneuvered for a takedown, but Paul alertly countered with a reversal into a pin o put the Yellow Jackets ahead 42-0.
Moorefield’s Jordan Fields grappled against Hampshire’s Ethan Moyer in the 138-lb. class.
Fields recorded a takedown, then flipped Moyer’s feet in the air and Moyer got back points.
The rappers flipped around on the mat and Fields managed a reversal, then a penalty forced a break.
Fields created a takedown and flipped Moyer to close out the first perid.
After a takedown by Fields in the second period, Moyer flipped around for a reversal and gathered the pin to put the Trojans on the board, 42-6.
Hampshire’s Ross Hicks scored a major decision over Moorefield’s Riley Pillus in the 144-lb. class to cut the deficit to 42-10.
Hicks and Pillus battled for wrist control and danced out of bounds twice early in the first period.
Both grapplers were rolling around, then Pillus tried lifting Hicks and was called for an illegal move.
Hicks developed a cradle, but Pillus was able to counter with a reversal to end the first period.
Hicks recorded a takedown in the second period and Pillus maneuvered out of the hold and up for an escape.
During the third period, Pillus earned back points and nearly got a the pin before Hicks squeezed out of the grasp for a reversal and collected the major decision win, 42-10.
Moorefield’s Alex Rodriguez started the 150-lb. match against Hampshire’s Peyton Heller with a takedown, but Heller was able to turn and escape the hold.
Rodriguez slammed Heller to the mat and got a tight hold for a first period pin.
Moorefield’s Dylan Colasessano faced off against Hampshire’s Connor Goff in the 157-lb. division.
Gpff got the initial takedown along the bounded line, then Colasessano responded with a reversal and pin in the opening round to give the Yellow Jackets a 54-10 advantage.
Wyatt Shirk collected a forfeit win to give the Yellow Jackets a 60-10 win over Hampshire.
The Falcons soared over the Trojans in the second match, then Frankfort edged Moorefield to garner the tri-match win.
Moorefield Wrestling will compete in the Class AA-A Region II Wrestling Tournament in Braxton County this weekend looking to punch tickets to the state tournament in Huntington starting on March 6.
