Joseph Allen “Joe” Palmer, 88, of Winchester, VA, died on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at the Winchester Medical Center.
Joe was born on May 21, 1936 in Winchester, VA, the son of the late Salis and Elizabeth Foster Palmer. He was a veteran in the United States Army Reserves, a carpenter in the Winchester area, a member of the Mt. Olive United Methodist Church in Hayfield, VA and attended Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Rio, WV. Joe enjoys hunting, especially coon hunting with his dogs, bird watching, NASCAR, football (Kansas City Chiefs), country & gospel music and being with his family & friends.
Joe married Shirley M. Cook Shipe Palmer on June 11, 2005 in Rio, WV.
Surviving with his wife of 19 years are five stepdaughters: Vivian D. Malone of Elizabethtown, KY; Brenda M. Mauck of Rabun Gap, GA; Connie D. Crites of Baker, WV; Corinna D. Alkire of Rio, WV; Angela M. Shipe of Mathias, WV; 13 step grandchildren, 17 step great-grandchildren and a step great-great-grandchild.
He is preceded in death by a brother: William “Sonny” Palmer and a sister: Virginia Loy.
A celebration of Joe’s life will be held at the Giffin Funeral Home & Crematory in Capon Bridge, WV on Sunday, March 16, 2025 at 3:00 PM. Officiating will be Pastor Doug Knupp. Inurnment will be in the Mt. Olive Cemetery in Hayfield, VA at a later date.
