Ruth Arvella Hawk Cosner, age 94, of Rig, WV entered the glorious gates of heaven on Friday, April 4, 2025 surrounded by her family. She was born in Maysville, WV on March 30, 1931. She was the daughter of the late Ohley M. and Willye (Schell) Hawk.
Ruth was a true inspiration to all, a faithful servant of the Lord. Her contagious love of life always made her such a joy to be around.
Ruth attended school in Maysville, WV until marrying Toney A. Cosner and settling at their home in Rig, WV. Ruth worked many years at American Woodmark until her husband’s health declined and she then decided to retire and take care of him. Ruthie as most would call her would find joy in prayer, strength in scripture and peace in the promise of eternal life. Sewing and baking brought her pleasure, making sure that everyone that stopped in for a visit never left with an empty stomach. She loved being out in nature gardening, hunting, fishing, camping at Vepco Lake and spending time with family and friends.
Surviving Ruth is her son Andy Cosner, two granddaughters, Angela (Greg) Berg of Maysville, WV, Toni (Hunter) Kite of Moorefield, WV; two great grandsons, Jeremy Berg and Kile Berg and two great granddaughters, Savannah Kite and Anniston Kite. Ruth is also survived by some very special neighbors, Van Hardy, Victor Carr, Carolyn Dolan, Damie Carr and their families that she loved so dearly.
Ruth is preceded in death by her husband, Toney A. Cosner in 2006; one brother, Ralph Hawk, three sisters, Lorene Purdum, Oleda VanMeter, and Marie Harper; and a special daughter-in-law, Linda L. Cosner.
Ruth was an active member of her community, always taking care of others and doing whatever needed to be done. Her entire life she held an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with those who surrounded her. She found comfort in Bible verses such as
II Timothy 4:7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. She now rests in the arms of our Savior, free from pain and sorrow, rejoicing in the presence of the Almighty.
Ruth’s family will receive friends on Monday, April 7, 2025 from 11 AM till 1 PM at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg. Funeral service will begin at 1 PM in the chapel with Pastor Dan Sterns officiating. Burial will follow in the Scherr-Idleman Cemetery, Scherr, WV.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Grant Rehabilitation and Care Center, 127 Early Avenue, Petersburg, WV 26847.
