The Yellow Jackets Tennis team swarmed the courts serving up success over Liberty-Harrison on senior night last Wednesday.
Moorefield Tennis honored its nine seniors with a special pre-match ceremony with the pavilion decorated with a balloon arch: Courtlynn Ault, Bethany Coon, Leah Jo Davis, Emily Vinoski, William Keplinger, Levi Malcolm, Hunter Mongold, Lian Mung and Hayes Sherman.
A Fox’s Pizza called the Big One with 54 slices was donated for the senior dinner celebration.
“These senior athletes mean a lot to me. It’s a privilege to coach such incredible people. Not only are they good tennis players, but are good leaders and people. The team and I will miss these athletes dearly, yet we wish them the best for their future,” Moorefield Boys Tennis coach Quincy Combs remarked.
Moorefield Girls Tennis No. 1 singles Courtlynn Ault, two-time Potomac Valley Conference champion, plans to attend West Virginia University and study accounting.
Ault is the recipient of the John Chambers School of Business and Economics Scholarship.
Moorefield Girls Tennis No 3 singles/No. 1 doubles Bethany Coon plans to attend Shepherd University and study sociology.
Moorefield Girls Tennis No. 4 singles/No. 2 doubles Emily Vinoski plans to attend Eastern Community College.
Moorefield Girls Tennis No. 3 doubles Leah Jo Davis plans to attend Shepherd University and major in music education.
Moorefield Boys Tennis No. 1 singles/doubles Lian Mung, three-time PVC team champion and two-time PVC singles and doubles champion, will be attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona, Florida to study aeronautical science and become a pilot.
Moorefield Boys Tennis No. 2 singles/doubles Levi Malcolm, three-time PVC team champion and two-time PVC singles and doubles champion, plans to work at Pilgrim’s Pride plant and become a day trader, while skiing and camping during free time.
Moorefield Boys Tennis No. 3 singles/No.2 doubles Hunter Mongold, three-time PVC team champion, plans to attend West Virginia University and earn a master’s degree in business administration.
Moorefield Boys Tennis No. 4 singles/No. 2 doubles William Keplinger, three-time PVC team champion, plans to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and major in aeronautical science to become a pilot.
Moorefield Boys Tennis No. 3 doubles Hayes Sherman, three-time PVC team champion, plans to attend WVU to major in finance with a minor in economics or accounting to become an investment banker or financial advisor, but a backup plan is to go to law school to become a lawyer.
Moorefield Girls Tennis earned a 6-1 victory over Liberty-Harrison.
Ault won the top singles match 8-3 over Liberty-Harrison’s Madison Jenkins.
Gracie Combs won the second seed singles match 8-4 over the Mountaineers’ Danielle Marsh.
Coon won the third seed singles match 8-2 over Liberty-Harrison’s Carmela Wankmuller.
Grace Tayman completed the singles sweep for the Yellow Jackets in the fourth seed match 8-3 over Liberty-Harrison’s Lilyana Criss.
The Mountaineers No. 1 doubles Jenkins/Marsh defeated Moorefield’s Combs/Coon.
Moorefield Girls No. 2 doubles Grace Tayman/Emily Vinoski edged Liberty-Harrison’s Criss/Waunkmuller in a tiebreaker 9-8/7-4/
Moorefield Girls No. 3 doubles Leah Jo Davis/Sakura Cameron won by forfeit.
Moorefield Boys Tennis only had one match featuring No. 1 singles Lian Mung recording a shutout 8-nil over Liberty-Harrison’s Asher Smith.
The Yellow Jackets had a fun doubles exhibition match for the seniors which included ball boys/line judges Lian Mung and Levi Malcolm.
Moorefield Tennis plays at Robert C. Byrd (girls) and Lincoln (boys) in regional competition this Saturday looking for a state tournament berth.
