For the baseball team, it’s a bit of good news, bad news. The good news is really good: they are the Big 12 Regular Season champs! They were picked fourth in the preseason poll, but still exceeded expectations. Congratulations to the team on an incredibly successful season.
The bad news? They might be playing their worst baseball of the year. They are certainly limping into the postseason. They lost their series last weekend at Kansas State, and were swept at home by Kansas to end the season. They are still the #1 overall seed in the Big 12 tournament, which begins today (May 21) and ends Saturday. WVU’s path is as follows: their first game is tomorrow (Thursday) at 1:30pm, against the winner of today’s 8 vs 9 game. Their semi-final game is scheduled for Friday at 5:00pm. Saturday’s final is at 7:00. The first two games would be on ESPN Plus, while the final will be on ESPNU.
WVU should be in good shape to make the NCAA tournament no matter what happens. As far as hosting a regional? I don’t think that will happen, unless WVU manages to win the Big 12 tournament, and even then, it might not be enough. WVU will find out its tournament fate on Monday (May 26) at noon, when ESPN2 hosts the baseball selection show.
In track and field, congratulations to WVU’s two newest Big 12 Champions. Joy Naukot became the second WVU runner to win the Big 12 10,000 meter run – a feat even more impressive when you consider she is just a freshman. Then Sarah Tait, a graduate student, not only won the 3000m steeplechase, she broke the conference meet record, which was set back in 2010. Both of them (and at least a couple of other Mountaineers) should next compete at the NCAA East Regional meet, which will be May 28-31.
