Raymond Clarence Shockey, age 89 of Moorefield, WV, passed away Friday evening, December 13, 2024, at the Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, VA. Born on October 26, 1935, in Old Fields, WV, he was the son of the late Seymour Welton Shockey and Nellie Mae Shoemaker Shockey. Raymond shared his life with his loving wife, Wanda Lee Crites, whom he married on December 24, 1958. They enjoyed many wonderful years together until her passing in February 2018. Siblings Benjamin Shockey, Roy Shockey, Dewey Shockey, Daniel Shockey, Jerry Shockey and Nancy Shockey Whetzel also preceded him in death.
Raymond served his country as a member of the U.S. Army in Germany, where he was part of the 1st Medium Tank Battalion, 35th Armor, 4th Armored Division. He went on to have a fulfilling career in law enforcement, including roles as an officer for the Town of Moorefield, a Deputy with the Hardy County Sheriff’s Office, and Sheriff of Hardy County. He later served as Hardy County Animal Control Officer.
He leaves behind his sons, James Ray Shockey (wife Vera) and John Edward Shockey, as well as his daughter, Sandra Lee Ours. He is survived by his brother Boyd Shockey and sister Alice Shockey Shingleton, along with ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
A Graveside Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at 1:00 pm at Bethel Cemetery in Old Fields, WV, with Pastor DJ Taylor officiating. The Service will include Military Graveside Rites accorded by the U.S. Army and Moorefield Veteran’s Honor Guard.
