East Hardy and Moorefield Wrestling teams competed at the Class AA/A Region II Tournament in Flatwoods with the Cougars landing two regional champions, Shawn Bodkin with 100 career wins and Sean O’Callaghan, as Hardy County combined for 11 state tournament berths.
The Yellow Jackets finished in third place at the Class AA/A Region II Tournament as a team (151.5), behind champion host Braxton County (207) and runner-up Roane County (176.5), while East Hardy took fourth place overall (147.5).
East Hardy Wrestling’s state bound wrestlers are: Region II 165-lb. champion senior Shawn Bodkin (35-8) who earned his 100th career win and took the title with a 7-2 decision over South Harrison’s Zane Harlow, Region II 285-lb. champion senior Sean O’Callaghan (38-5) earning the crown with a pin at 0:43 against Grafton’s Braxton Rush, Region II 215-lb. runner-up sophomore Garrett Van Meter (24-3) in a 16-8 decision loss to Roane County’s Lane Watson, 106-lb. third place sophomore Aaron Barb (32-9) with a pin at 0:42 over Braxton County’s Deklan Meadows, 190-lb. third place senior Eli Mathias (28-7) with a 0:51 pin against South Harrison’s Wyatt Koontz, and 175-lb. fourth place sophomore Ryan Harmon (23-15).
Moorefield Wrestling’s state bound grapplers are: Region II 150-lb. runner-up sophomore Alex Rodriguez (34-13) in a 0:23 pin loss Braxton County’s Preston Smith, Region II 120-lb. runner-up sophomore Javier Acosta (45-11) with a 4:37 pin loss to South Harrison’s Maddox Lewis, , Region II 190-lb. runner-up senior Earl Wyman (47-6) in 16-1 technical fall to Ritchie County’s James Sonju, 144-lb. third place senior Riley Pillus (50-9) with 4:26 pin over Roane County’s Jimmy Lance, 157-lb. fourth place senior Dylan Colasessano (33-12) in a 4-3 decision loss to Doddridge County’s Noah Wekseth and fifth place state alternates 175-lb. sophomore Caleb Flinn (17-9) and 285-lb. senior Aiden Jones (26-16).
The WVSSAC state wrestling tournament will be held in Huntington from March 6-8.
